WORKSHOPS
THE RHYTHMIC SYSTEM OF SOUTH INDIA
A workshop by and with Dr. Rohan Krishnamurthy and Ernst Ströer
Dr. Rohan Krishnamurthy, an outstanding percussion virtuoso and teacher, lives in San Francisco and teaches at several American universities. As a leading interpreter of classical Indian music, he gives concerts with masters such as M. Balamuralikrishna, T.N. Krishnan, N. Ramani. His interest in crossover projects is reflected in concerts with Grammy award winners Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Ronu Majumdar and his own musical projects. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors.
Together with the students, we explore the limitless possibilities offered by the oldest and most comprehensive rhythmic concept in the world.
Our workshop deals with the universal aspects of South Indian rhythm that can be applied to all instruments.
The drum syllable language Solkattu and the counting of various Talas play a central role here - ingenious tools for calibrating the inner clock and understanding complex rhythmic relationships.
They help us not only to better understand unusual meters and subdivisions (quintuplets, septuplets, etc.), but also to really feel and internalize them. To this end, we talk and play together with the students.
At the same time, we give an introduction to the playing techniques of typical South Indian instruments such as kanjira and mridangam and the possibilities of applying these techniques to other percussion instruments and drums.

MUSIC FOR FILM AND THEATER
A workshop on composing and producing music for film and theater.
Using concrete examples, we will look at the individual work steps from the first work meeting to the finalmixing or the theater premiere. In addition to the technical aspects, the human factors are particularly important to me:
How do we achieve constructive collaboration with the director, the producer/intendant, the actors, the sound engineer, the editor, the sound designer?
What sources of inspiration are open to us in order to find the right musical idea and the right sound and how do we make the best use of them?
What difficulties can arise and how can we overcome them: Caution when talking about music - Treacherous briefings and other misunderstandings - Temptracks - The right listening - Initial enthusiasm and late doubts - Editing changes and much more
